Inside Overtone's Music

"I heard them live, and was blown away by how great they sounded!" "Their voices are amazing, harmonies are great. I am a big fan of Overtone."
Matt Damon Clint Eastwood
Overtone is known for its original music as well as brilliant covers of popular songs. Passkey was the band's first radio single in the United States. Click here to listen.

Passkey
Overtone started as a "university serenade group" in their native Johannesburg, South Africa. After re-grouping as a seven member a cappella band, they released their hit CD, Frequency, featuring their own spin on classic pop, rock and traditional tunes.

Four Minutes to Save the World

Crazy
After being "re-discovered" by the Eastwoods, Overtone recorded the soundtrack to Clint's notorious film, Invictus. Band member Ernie Bates says, "One of the best songwriters in South Africa, Daniel Po, had written a song about Nelson Mandela's daunting job; unifying our country. He got the song, Colorblind, to us, and Clint put it in the movie. We were so stoked!" The soundtrack also included a tribute song, 9,000 Days, referencing the time President Mandela spent in prison on Robben Island. It features music and lyrics written by the Eastwoods and Overtone.

Colorblind

9,000 Days
After relocating to America, Overtone started writing their own songs to be performed with instruments. Band member Emile Welman says, "I'd never written a song before, and wasn't sure I could do it! But, we love how this song, The Plan, turned out." Soon, all members of Overtone were writing material for the band to perform. Ruan Van Zyl created his tribute to livin the good life in Los Angeles. They can't wait to share it with the world when they release their new CD, Lucky Punks, by the end of 2010.
